Cal's Maite Zabala Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week

BERKELEY -- University of California goalkeeper, Maite Zabala, was named the Pacific-10 conference's Women's Soccer Player of the Week Monday afternoon, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced.

Zabala, a sophomore from Boise, Idaho, made her first two collegiate starts in goal for the Golden Bears against two top-ranked teams last week. The first came Friday in Houston, Texas, against No. 1 North Carolina. Though the Tar Heels won the match, Zabala held the defending national champions to one goal, making 11 saves and facing 26 shots on the afternoon.

It was only the second time in eight games this season that the Tar Heels, who had been averaging nearly five goals a game, were limited to a single score. During UNC's 25-1 season last year, the Tar Heels were held to one goal only three times.

Two days later against 18th-ranked Massachusetts, Zabala made her second start. Versus the Minutewomen, she collected two saves and faced 14 shots in the Bears 2-1 victory.
