BERKELEY - As part of its preparations for the 2008 season, the California lacrosse team will battle the U.S. women's national teams and MPSF opponent Oregon as part of the second annual U.S. Lacrosse Stars & Stripes Weekend Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7, at Tualatin Hills Park and Athletic Center in Beaverton, Ore. First-year head coach Theresa Sherry, a former U.S. player, will lead the Golden Bears into exhibition matches against the U.S. Elite and U.S. Developmental teams as well as the Ducks at the event, which will feature 14 games over two days. The Bears, Oregon and fellow MPSF team Stanford compose the field of college teams that will play the U.S. squads. Cal plays the U.S. Elite team at 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 and faces the U.S. Developmental team at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 7. The Bears play Oregon at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 7. "I am very excited for the team to play in the Stars and Stripes tournament this weekend," Sherry said. "It is a great opportunity for our 2008 group to set the tone for the kind of year that they want to have. After only a couple weeks of practice, we expect to have a lot of fun, but also to learn a lot from playing against the best players in the country. We are looking forward to being pushed by the U.S. teams, and by conference rival Oregon, throughout the couple days we are there." Four high school clubs - Oregon Elite, NorCal Elite, Puget Sound Select and Cardinal Elite - will compete against each other during this weekend's festivities, which also include a coaches' clinic, youth clinic and U.S. players' clinic.
