BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears women's gymnastics team opened its season Saturday, Jan. 10, with a 7 p.m. tri-meet, hosting Sacramento State and UC Davis at Haas Pavilion. Sacramento State, posting a team score of 191.975, edged UC Davis and Cal to win the team title.

Cal had a strong showing in the beam with senior Jessica Kelley taking second with a 9.675. Sophomore Avery Gee was third with a 9.625.

Kelley, who placed fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.725 and fifth on the bars with another 9.725, finished third in the all-around. Junior Sophia Hocini was fourth in the all-around, followed by sophomore Stephanie Cheng in fifth who posted a personal best all-around score.

In all, the gymnasts had three personal bests in events, and both Cheng and Avery Gee had personal bests in the all-around.

"I think this was a good starting point," said Cal head coach Cari DuBois. "We know what we need to work on, and we are going to keep working on it, day by day and week by week. We need to go out and do what we need to do, to do what we can each and every meet and just work hard and do what we are capable of doing."

The Bears are back in action next Friday, Jan. 16, when they travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State and Arkansas.
