SAN JOSE, Calif. - The California women's gymnastics team recorded a 192.475 to place third in a tri-meet with Maryland and San Jose State Friday evening inside Spartan Gym in San Jose. The Spartans captured first place with a score of 194.900, while the Terrapins placed second with a score of 194.250.
Juniors Madisyn O'Brien and Stina Olivere led the Bears on the bars with identical scores of 9.750 to tie for third overall in the event. Sophomore Alicia Asturias was right behind her teammates with a score of 9.725 to place seventh overall. San Jose State's Alyssa Telles-Nolan and Thomasina Wallace tied for first place with a score of 9.825.
Junior Nicolette Lew paced Cal on the balance beam with a score of 9.725 to finish fifth overall. O'Brien and senior Erica Varon each recorded a season-high score of 9.675 in the event to tie for seventh overall. Senior Alexandra Leggitt scored a 9.650 in the event to place 10th overall. San Jose State's Julia Greer and Wallace, as well as Maryland's Stephanie Giameo and Ally Kirkorian each tied for first place on the beam with a score of 9.825.
Leggitt guided the Bears in the floor exercise with a season-high-tying score of 9.725 to tie for ninth in the event. Katie Valleau of San Jose State scored a 9.900 in the floor exercise to win the event title.
Cal completed Friday's competition on the vault where sophomore Dallas Crawford led Cal with a career-best performance in the event. The Golden Bear scored a 9.775 to tie for fourth overall. Juniors Chelsea Spomer and Arla Rosenzweig each scored a 9.700 to tie for 11th, while Paz posted a score of 9.675 to finish 13th. Wallace of San Jose State and Katy Dodds of Maryland tied for first place on the vault with a score of 9.850.
The Bears did not have a competitor in the all-around during Friday's competition. Wallace was the lone competitor in the all-around in Friday's competition, scoring a 39.350 for San Jose State.
Cal continues its four-meet stretch on the road next Sunday, March 4, at Stanford at 2 p.m.
