LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND - California Golden Bear senior Roseanne Niven will be competing this week at the Ricoh British Women's Open. Niven earned her spot in the field by winning the 2008 British Amateur.
Niven will be competing against all the top-20 professional players, and 47 of the top-50 players, in the world, including Lorena Ochoa, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Michelle Wie, Angela Stanford, Karrie Webb and Helen Alfredsson. The field will also include the winners of the first three major championships of 2009: Brittany Lincicome (Kraft Nabisco Championship), Anna Nordqvist (McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola) and Eun-Hee Ji (U.S. Women's Open).
Niven won last year's Ladies British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship Aug. 20-22 at Malone Golf Club near Belfast, Ireland in a sudden-death playoff. This will be her first appearance at a Major championship.
Cal alum Vikki Laing '03 also qualified for the tournament. Lang finished the British Open Final Qualifying tournament at Fairhaven Golf Course in a tie for fourth, shooting a one-under 73 to earn her spot in the field.
The opening round will take place on Thursday, July 30. The final round will be played on Sunday, August 2.

How they faredLaing finished her first round shooting a one-under to land in the top-10 after 18 holes, tied for seventh place. After shooting an 80 on Friday, she made the cut, playing through the weekend ending up with a 309 (73-80-77-79). Niven shot a +4 76 in her second round, but fell below the cut line and did not advance to play through the weekend.
In other Cal golf news, Pia Halbig and the other members of the Continent of Europe team defeated the Great Britain & Ireland squad to win the Vagliano Trophy. This was Halbig's first time being named to the prestigious European Vagliano Trophy team.
