BERKELEY - The California women's golf team opens its spring season at the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, the home of this year's NCAA West Regional Championship.
The 36-hole tournament runs Saturday and Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course, which features a par-71, 6,051-yard layout.
Thirteen teams will compete this weekend in the first of three Northern California tournaments to open the spring for the Bears. Along with No. 42 California are No. 2 Washington, No. 10 UC Davis, No. 18 Stanford, No. 67 San Jose State, No. 72 New Mexico, No. 84 Oregon State, No. 91 Fresno State, Boston College, Nevada, USF, Santa Clara and Rollins College.
The Bears will tee off with Fresno State on Saturday with the lineup of Carly Childs, Hannah Suh, Morgan Thompson, Jaqueline Williams and Nicola Roessler. Interesting Note: Childs's sister, Emily, is the lone Golden Bear to win the Peg Barnard Invitational, a feat the elder Childs accomplished in the spring 2011 season with a 73-67-140 (-2).
"We're super excited to be out," California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "We're really just looking forward to the competition because we've been practicing for two to three weeks. We have five fall rounds behind us. We hae some freshmen really stepping up. That's going to be exciting when someone steps up like Carly Childs did in the last five rounds. The spring is going to be really good. We're around 40 in the nation and we are not satisfied with that ranking from the fall. Going into the spring, I think that gets us even more excited about going forward and prove that the Bears are back."
