STANFORD, Calif. - Second Round Photo Gallery | Complete Results The No. 7 California Golden Bears finished out the fall portion of their schedule tying for ninth place at the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at Stanford Golf Course. Junior Joanne Lee finished fifth among individuals. Much of the final round was played in cold, wet, miserable conditions. Things deteriorated to the point where play had to be halted for two hours. Play resumed when the conditions improved, but the rains kept up for most of the day. The Bears finished the day with a 309 (+25) on the par-71, 6,148 yard Stanford Golf Course. They finished in a tie for ninth with Washington at 890 (+38). UCLA won the tournament with a score of 856 (+4). Junior Joanne Lee had the lowest third round score for the Bears, shooting a three-over 74. Lee had opened the tournament with a school-record six-under 65 in the first round and had a 73 (+2) in the second round. She finished at one-under for the tournament, putting her in fifth place in a field of some of the best golfers in the country. USC's Sophia Popov was the individual medalist at -6. Lee and senior Pia Halbig were the only Cal players to card birdies in the wet, soggy conditions. Lee birdied her first hole of the day in the shotgun start, which was hole number four. Halbig, who started on six, birdied hole number one as she was coming down the stretch. Before Lee's first round six-under 65, Cal's previous single-round low score was a five-under 67, a feat that has been accomplished five times including last season by Lee herself at the Pac-10 Championships. Pia Halbig also shot a 67 in the second round of the Mason Rudolph last month in Tennessee.
"I had a lot of good lies," said Lee of her record round. "I only hit 11 greens, but I only had 21 putts, a record for me. I had four birdies in my final five holes, and I was mad because I missed 18." The Bears will take a break in their schedule, returning to competition in early February when they head to Arizona for the Wildcat Invitational.
