ERIE, Colo. Senior Daniela Holmqvist's one-under, 71 led the California Golden Bears in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional in Erie, Colo. With the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA National Championships, the Bears are in a tied for fifth place with 36 holes remaining in the tournament. The Bears and 23 other teams teed off in the first round of the NCAA West Regional, being held at the par-72, 6,575-yard Colorado National Golf Course in Erie, Colorado. The teams are vying for one of eight berths to come from the West Regional for the NCAA National Championships which will be held in Franklin, Tenn. May 22-25. The Bears, as the No. 5 seed, had a morning tee time, finishing up the first 18 holes with a +8 296. North Carolina had the early lead, finishing up in the early afternoon with an even-par 288. The Stanford Cardinal, the No. 15 seed, played in the afternoon, taking over the top-position with a one-under 287. Sydney Burlison, the No. 5 player in the Cardinal lineup, currently leads the tournament after shooting a first-round 67. Senior Daniela Holmqvist led the Bears, shooting a one-under 71. Starting the day on the 10th hole, Holmqvist birdied two of her first three holes. After giving back two strokes on 15 and 16 and then climbing to one-over after a bogey on the par-four hole number one, she birdied holes three and six to finish at one-under. Holmqvist will enter the second round tied for fourth place among the 126 players in the field. She has not finished outside the top-five in a tournament this spring. Junior Jacqueline Williams had a double bogey on her second hole of the day, but birdies on 12 and 17 put her at even par at the turn. She bogeyed the par-four third hole and then got back to even on the next hole, getting a birdie on the par-four fourth. She held steady at even-par until getting a double bogey on her second-to-last hole to finish the round at +2.
Sophomore Nicola Roessler also carded a 74. Roessler had four birdies to six bogeys to finish in a tie for 34th at two-over. The Bears will play a second round of 18 on Friday, May 11, with the third and final round taking place on Saturday, May 12. The Bears will start on Hole No. 1 with tee times beginning at 12:56 p.m. Mountain Time. Live scoring for all rounds will be available through Golfstat.
