PLEASANTON, Calif. - California finished eighth overall at 302-305=607 (+31) at the Cal Classic at Ruby Hill, the first tournament hosted by the Golden Bears in eight years. Sophomore Morgan Thompson led the Bears with a 4-over 148 (73-75) to finish 12th individually.
Thompson finished 3-over on the day to lead the Bears for the second straight week while freshman Carly Childs had a five-stroke improvement over her opening round to place 18th at 78-73=151 (+7). Childs began the day with a birdy on hole eight and a bogey on hole nine before rattling off nine consecutive pars on the back nine. The Alameda native then bogeyed hole one to finish at one-over on the day.
Hannah Suh and Nicola Rossler both tied for 29th at 10-over 154's. Suh shot a 75-79-154 and Rossler shot a 76-78=154, and Jaqueline Williams rounded out Cal's effort at 81-79=160 (+16).
Competing individually, Pleasanton-native Joi Pentin shot an 81-76=157 (+13) to finish 41st along with teammate Robert Roller (76-78=157). Pauline Loulier completed her collegiate debut with an 80-79=159 (+15), and Jo Ee Kok matched Williams at an 81-79=160.
Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez took home the individual title at 68-71=139 (-5). Stanford won the team title at 298-288=586 (+10), six strokes ahead of Arizona State's 296-296=592 (+16). San Diego State, UC Davis and UNLV rounded out the top five.
California remains in the Bay Area next week when the Bears compete in the Julie Inkster Spartan Invitational hosted by San Jose State at the Alamaden Golf Club in San Jose. That two-day tournament will begin March 4.
