PLEASONTON, Calif. - Hosting their first tournament in eight years, the California women's golf team sits six strokes behind No. 14 Arizona State after the first day of the two-day Cal Classic held at the Ruby Hill Golf Course in Pleasanton, Calif. The site of the 2005 Pac-10 Championships, Cal is one of seven teams within six strokes of each other at the top of the table. The Bears shot a 302 (+14) Monday with sophomore Morgan Thompson leading the way with a one-over 73 through 18 holes. The Sun Devils lead the par-72, 6,203 yard course with a 296 (+8), followed by No. 13 Stanford at 297 (+9), No. 11 UC Davis at 298 (+10), San Diego State at 300 (+12) and Coastal Carolina at 301 (+13). The final day of the 36-hole tournament continues Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Thompson led the Bears Monday with a first round 73 (+1). Thompson hit par on her first five holes of the day before hitting birdies on three consecutive from holes No. 6 to No. 8. She finished the front nine with a 2-under (34) and finished the back nine with a 39 for her one-over 73 for the day. Hannah Suh had one of the most consistent days for Cal on the course and finished with a 75 (+3). Suh hit par on 11 of 18 holes and earned birdies on No. 4 and No. 7. Nicola Rossler shot a four-over 76 Monday, rebounding nicely from a triple bogey on her first hole of the day. After using 12 strokes on her opening two holes, Rossler held steady at near four-over the rest of the day, shooting even over the final 16 holes. Carly Childs rounded out Cal's scoring efforts with a 78 (+6), and Jaqueline Williams shot an 81 (+9). Competing individually were Roberta Roller (76, +4), Pauline Loulier - who shot an 80 (+8) in her first collegiate event - Jo Ee Kok (81, +9) and Joi Pentin (81, +9). California returns to the course Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in the final day of the Cal Classic at Ruby Hill. The 11 teams will tee off with a shotgun start. CALIFORNIA INDIVIDUAL RESULTS T17.
