California head coach Shellie Onstead will be touring with the United States Under-21 Junior Men's field hockey team as an assistant coach at a preparation tournament in Santiago, Chile, next week. The U.S. squares off against the host nation Dec. 14 and 17 and plays Argentina Dec. 16 and 19. The competition is in preparation for February's Pan-American tournament in Havana, Cuba, a qualifier for the Junior World Cup, scheduled for Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 2005.
Onstead has served U.S. Field Hockey in a variety of coaching positions. She became the first woman to be named head coach of a men's national team at any age level, leading the Under-16 squad from 1999-01. She was an assistant coach on the Men's National Team in 2000 at the America's Cup tournament in Cuba and a 2001 World Cup Qualifier in Scotland. In May 2002, Onstead helped coach the Men's Under-21 and Men's National Teams at the California Cup, an international tournament contested in Moorpark, Calif. A member of the U.S. Women's National Team from 1985-86, Onstead was a video analyst for the 2002 U.S. Women's World Cup team that competed in Perth, Australia.
