UMass Field Hockey Defeats California 8-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Erica Johnston (Enfield Conn.) tied a career-high with four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts field hockey team to a 8-1 victory over California in the first game of the Phoenix Invitational. Johnston scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game and added another in the first half to give her team a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Junior midfielder Vicky Browne (North Shields, England) scored one goal and had four assists for six points in her first game with the Minutewomen. Sophomore forward Chris Millbauer (Easton, Conn) added two goals and senior co-captain Courtney MacLean (Westboro, Mass.) scored one to round up the scoring. California forward Sara Baron scored at 44:58 in the second half to prevent the shutout.

Michigan State defeated New Hampshire 4-1 in the afternoon game to set up a championship game between the Minutewomen and Spartans. Senior forwards Rayna Hiscox and Annie Berberich each scored two goals to lead Michigan State.

Massachusetts and Michigan State will play each other for the championship tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. California and New Hampshire will meet in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m.
