Bears Shutout Rhode Island, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Elke Popp, Sara Baron and Leslie Katch all netted goals for the California field hockey team in its 3-0 defeat over Rhode Island Thursday, Sept. 4 in Providence, RI. The Bears improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Rams fell to 0-1.

Popp, a junior defender for Cal, started the scoring with 26:20 remaining in the first half. Baron followed suit seventeen minutes later with the third goal of her sophomore season. She has had a goal in each of the Bears three games so far. Megan Sainsbury assisted on both first half goals.

In the second half, freshman Leslie Katch scored her second goal of the year off a Caitlin Braucht assist with 14:40 remaining.

Senior goalkeeper Karen Hagan recorded her second shutout of the year.

Cal will be on the road at the UMass tournament for its next two matches. The Bears face the host team, Massachusetts, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.
