Bears Drop Game to Michigan, 2-1

The California field hockey team lost to Michigan, 2-1, in the second game of the season Sunday on Kleeberger Field dropping its record to 1-1. The Wolverines (2-0) controlled most of the game, outshooting the Bears 32-3.

Cal sophomore Sara Baron scored the only goal of the first half just five minutes into play off a penalty corner. Sophomore Megan Sainsbury and senior Elke Popp earned the assists.

In the second half, Michigan tied the score, 1-1, off a penalty corner by junior Loveita Wilkinson, at the 45-minute mark. The Wolverines went on to take the lead thirteen minutes later on a goal by senior Julie Flachs.

Senior Karen Hagen had an impressive defensive game for Cal, notching 21 saves in the losing effort.

Cal will be on the road for its next three matches. Up next for the Bears will be Rhode island in Providence at 7 p.m. ET.
