Bears Defeat Simon Fraser, 2-0
BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Elke Popp led the California field hockey team with two goals in the final eight minutes as the Bears notched a 2-0 win over Canada's Simon Fraser Friday afternoon on Kleeberger Field.
Despite dominating the offensive front with 15 shots on goal, Cal (6-8, 1-1) was held scoreless until Popp nailed a penalty stoke for the game-winning goal with 7:45 remaining in the second half. She followed through with a second score seven minutes later on a penalty corner. Senior Grace Kim and sophomore Megan Sainsbury garnered the assists on the play. Sainsbury now totals nine assists on the season which moves her into fourth place in the Cal record book. On the career lists, she stands in a tie for third place with 12. Senior goalkeeper Karen Hagen recorded her fifth shutout of the year.
The Bears return to action tomorrow in a conference matchup with Pacific at 11 a.m. on Kleeberger Field. Cal has defeated Pacific twice already this season in Stockton, 4-2 and 2-0, respectively.
