BERKELEY - On senior day, the University of California field hockey team (6-11, 2-4) downed the UC Davis Aggies 6-0. The Bears received points from 4 different seniors, including two points and two assists from forward Rachelle Comeau. It was the final game of the 2012 regular season of the Golden Bears.
Playing without a full roster, the Golden Bears played one of their best offensive games to date. Junior midfielder Shannon Elmitt was out with illness, and senior forward Lauren Livingston was injured in practice on Thursday. However, the rest of the team stepped up two score six goals on just 15 shots. The Golden Bear offensive success may have been due to excellent accuracy from the Bears, as 10 of those shots were on target
The Golden Bear defense was also stellar in the effort. Only allowing eight Aggie shots, four on goal. Senior Deanna Kennedy, freshman Clara Goni, and junior Allie Swartz were instrumental in keeping the Aggie attack at bay.
Cal earned its first goal just over one minute into the game on their first attack. Comeau shot a pass from high on the right side that was perfectly tipped past the goalie by fellow senior forward Claire Dougherty for her first goal of the game. Comeau also had a hand in the second goal. She sent a long pass in from about 35 yards out to a large group of players in front of the goal. Junior forward Jordan O'Reilly was able to get the slightest of touches on it, and it snuck past the goalie to give Cal the 2-0 lead at the half.
In the 45th minute of the game, Dougherty earned her second goal and her third of the season when the Bears were able to convert a penalty corner. Freshman midfielder Marcia Venter found Dougherty just in front of the right side of the cage again, and Dougherty flipped it in. The Bears weren't done yet. Sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel found senior midfielder Kendra Bills wide open near the top of the arc, and Bills' blast hit the back of the goal to push the margin to 4-0. Not willing to just assist, Comeau decided to get in on the goal parade. Kruggel earned her second assist of the day when she passed from the left to the right side for Comeau's tally. Then, after Davis was penalized with a five minute yellow card, the Bears broke away. Comeau started it with a pass to sophomore midfielder Caroline Struijk. She found senior defender Laura Spellman, who force the goalie to commit before passing to Comeau for the forward's second goal, and bringing the score to its final, 6-0.
The game was Cal's last of the 2012 regular season. The Bears will now travel to Farmville, Va. for the NorPac tournament. The first game will be on Thursday, Nov. 1 with the time TBA. The winner of the tournament will earn a bid into the NCAA tournament.
