Durham, N.C. - The University of California field hockey team (5-9, 1-3) fell to the Duke Blue Devils (7-9) for thier fifth road loss this season on Friday evening. Caroline Struijk scored the lone goal for the Golden Bears.
California and Duke played 25 minutes until sophomore Caroline Struijk converted a penalty corner injected by junior Shannon Elmitt and stopped by senior Kendra Bills to score her fifth goal of the season to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, as Duke was able to tie it up off a penalty corner of their own. The teams took a 1-1 tie into the half.
In the second half, the Golden Bears began a strong offensive attack and dominated the ball, amassing eight shots to only three for Duke, but the Golden Bears were unable to find the back of the net. The 1-1 tie remained as the game extended into the extra period.
Duke took the offensive in overtime. In the 78th minute, a green card was issued to Elmitt, and down a player, Duke was able to score the game winning goal after a penalty corner rebound fell right onto a Blue Devil stick.
California will return to the pitch Sunday at Wake Forest for a 9 a.m. start.
