OXFORD, Ohio - The California field hockey team remained winless on the road in 2009, as Miami of Ohio edged past the Golden Bears, 2-1, in extra periods on Friday in Oxford, Ohio. Junior Natalie Nurnberg scored Cal's lone goal in the 45th minute. Cal falls to 4-9 on the season, while the RedHawks improve to 9-7. Friday's match was the final nonconference game of the year for the Bears. Jackie Nguyen from Miami of Ohio opened up the scoring with her goal in the 12th minute to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. Mary Hull found Nguyen on a breakaway, and she was able to shoot one past Cal's goalkeeper, Maddie Hand. Hand made nine saves on the afternoon. Nguyen's goal was the only one of the first half. In the 45th minute, Nurnberg scored to even the match at one. Nurnberg scored off of a rebound from a penalty corner. The goal was Nurnberg's seventh, and she leads her team in that category. Sophomore Erin Magill earned the assist. Magill also notched her first defensive save of the season on Friday. Cal's goal was the only one of the second half. Miami ended the game within the first five minutes of the first extra period. Hull scored the gamewinner in the 74th minute. Just like Nurnberg's goal, Hull scored off of a rebound from a penalty corner. Amanda Seeley recorded the assist. The RedHawks outshot the Bears, 21-9, and earned six corners to Cal's three. Nurnberg led the Bears with three shots. Both she and sophomore Jessica Kreck had two shots on goal. Cal's final appearance of the season at Maxwell Family Field will be against Pacific on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m.
