STOCKTON, Calif. -
The California Golden Bears opened up NorPac play with an emphatic 10-0 victory at Pacific. Senior Megan Shimojima scored four goals on four shots.
Shimojima got the Bears on the scoreboard, netting the first goal of the game ten minutes into the contest off a feed from junior Kendra Bills. Shimojima would add two more goals in the first half, one at the 26:06 mark and another at the 30:54 mark. Sophomore Andrea Earle also connected on a goal to give Cal a 4-0 lead at the half.
The Bears continued the domination in the second half, scoring six goals. The Bears had a scoring frenzy starting at the seven minute mark of the second half, scoring four goals in a ten minute span. In addition to Shimojima netting her fourth of the game, Cal also got two scores from sophomore Jordan O'Reilly an a goal from freshman Lara Kruggel in that span. Kruggel also scored at the 65:58 mark. Junior Lauren Livingston also scored in the second half.
Kruggel, in addition to her two goals, also had four assists. She took six shots, five on goal. "We played a complete game," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "Everyone played well. There was not one player who really stood out. It was a team effort. It is really to see the scoring evenly distributed and makes me very excited about the future."
The 10 goals were the most scored by the Bears in a game since Oct. 2, 2005 when they defeated Appalachian State, 11-0, in a game played at Davidson.
The Bears amassed 29 shots in the game, while holding Pacific to just three shots. Senior goalie Maddie Hand had two saves. Redshirt freshman Courtney Hendrickson made her collegiate debut in the second half, playing the final 35 minutes in goal.
"My biggest concern was there might be a let down after last week," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "Obviously, there wasn't. I was also happy that they did a great job with the field up there and the surface wasn't a factor in the game."
The Bears improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the NorPac Conference. Pacific falls to 1-1 and has the same mark in NorPac.
The Golden Bears will play their home opener next weekend, taking on Northeastern on Friday, Sept. 9 at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley. The time of that game has been moved up to 6 p.m.
