BERKELEY - California lost to the University of Victoria, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field in the Golden Bears' final scrimmage before opening the 2008 regular season on Saturday at Pacific. Cal outshot the Vikes, 7-6, and posted a 5-3 shots on goal advantage, but goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams made five saves to keep the Bears out of her net and give Cal a 1-1 exhibition record.
Victoria's Sumeet Aujla assisted on Natalie Wise's strike for Tuesday's lone goal in the 55th minute.
Cal sophomore forward Natalie Nurnberg and senior defender Carolina Bistue each tallied a shot in the first half, but Williams saved both efforts. Nurnberg and Bistue led the Bears with two shots each for the game.
The Bears also had a 6-4 penalty corners advantage against the Vikes.
The scrimmage gave Cal head coach Shellie Onstead a chance to play most of her players. Twenty one Bears got into the match, including three of the four goalkeepers. Redshirt freshman Maddie Hand started in goal followed by true freshman Haleh Nourani and senior Kelly Knoche.
"They were tired," Onstead said of her players. "We're still in our preseason, ending that today. I used most of my players, so we didn't get into a groove as far as the starting lineup. There are things we still need to work on."
Cal defeated Stanford, 5-1, in a scrimmage on Aug. 23 in Stanford, Calif.
The Bears next play the Pacific Tigers in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Stockton, Calif.
