Cal Falls to No. 12 Northwestern in Overtime, 2-1

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore Wendy Deford beat three defenders and the goalie to score the game-winning goal with 1:13 into the second overtime to lift the No.12 Northwestern field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over California Thursday at Dyche Stadium.

NU's first goal came at 32:34 of the second half when senior Ellie Karvoski scored her team-leading sixth goal. She was assisted by senior Amy Borneman, who now has seven to lead the team, and junior Julie Lind, who picked up her third. After taking only four shots on goal in the first half, the 'Cats came out firing in the second, scoring just 2:26 into the half. Cal tied the game at 16:35 on a shot from the outside circle by Megan Sainsbury.

Overall, NU held a 22-13 advantage in shots. The Wildcats also held a 9-8 edge in corners. NU goalie Schoen Libert had a solid game as she recorded seven saves in goal. Cal's Karen Hagan had 12 saves in goal.
