BERKELEY - Cal's national champion women's crew placed four rowers - Jelena Djukic, Iva Obradovic, Kaylan Vander Schilden and Remy Hitomi (coxswain) - on the College Rowing Coaches Association first team All-America squad, the CRCA announced today.
The awards, presented by Pocock, recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains for the spring season. Forty-five student-athletes were honored, 20 first-team selections and 25 second-team selections. Twelve schools had multiple selections, led by Cal with four. NCAA runner-up Virginia, Ohio State, Princeton and Yale each had three.
Thirty-three of the 45 student-athletes were participants at the NCAA championships last weekend, including all 20 first-team selections. The national champion Golden Bears produced four first-team rowers, more than any other school.
The New England Region produced the most All-America selections with 13, including five first-team honorees. The West Region produced the most first-team selections with seven. The Central Region produced 10 All-Americans, including five on the first team. The South Region had seven All-America choices, while the Mid-Atlantic Region had four.
Cal won its first NCAA team title in women's rowing last Sunday, keyed by a gold medal by the varsity 8. The Bears out-pointed Virginia, 67-63, to claim the crown.
