ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Three members of Cal's varsity eight boat were named to the CRCA All-America Team today. Senior co-captain Martha Helgeland and sophomore Kaylan Vander Schilden were named to the first team, while junior Laura Terheyden was named to the second team.
Helgeland led the Golden Bears to an undefeated regular season and their first ever Pac-10 team title. With Helgeland, the varsity eight won its second straight Jessop-Whittier Cup and also defeated Washington for the first time in 13 years. At the NCAAs, the Bears finished sixth in the varsity eight grand final and placed fourth overall.
Vander Schilden rowed in the five seat for the Bears this season. She has been a member of the varsity eight since coming to Cal as a freshman last year. This this is the second straight year that she has been named to the All-America Team; last year she was named to the second team.
Like Vander Schilden, Terheyden has been an integral part of the varsity eight since her freshman year. The junior from Colma rowed in the six seat for the Bears this season and helped the varsity eight win its first Pac-10 title since 1979.
