Women's Crew Falls to Washington

April 25, 1998

REDWOOD SHORES, CA - The Cal women's varsity eight was outdistanced by the top-ranked Washington Huskies in dual meet competition on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, Saturday, April 25. The Bears raced well through the 1500 meter mark trailing Washington by just over a boat length, but the Huskies increased their margin over the final 500 meters of the race to go on to for the win.

"I thought we raced well today," said coach Marisa Hurtado. "We seemed to be hanging in there for the first 1500. Our squad needs to look at this as a learning experience and build on it for the future. We have three tough races coming up next week against Stanford, Washington State and Kansas and I hope that our experience today will make us better next week."

Unfortunately for the Bears, the margins between themselves and their Husky counterparts were consistent in each event. Both the JV and womens novice eights dropped races by 7-8 seconds.

Results: (2000 meters at Redwood Shores)

Women's Varsity Eight 1. Washington 6:26.3 2. Cal 6:34.5
