Camille Burkes, a former successful player and head coach, enters her fifth season as an assistant coach for the California women's basketball team.
A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Burkes' duties include assisting with the post players' development, scouting, camps and community service. She also serves as the team's academic coordinator, helping the Bears attain at least a 3.0 team GPA for the last two and a half years.
Burkes, an original member of head coach Caren Horstmeyer's staff, came to Berkeley after serving in 1999-00 as the head women's basketball coach at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) in Madison, Wis. She led the Division III team to a conference title with an 8-0 record while overseeing the entire operation of the program, including game strategies, practices, recruiting and fundraising.
Prior to coaching at MATC, Burkes worked in the high school ranks in the Madison area. She was the assistant varsity girls' basketball coach at James Madison Memorial from 1998-99 and the freshmen girls' basketball coach at Middleton from 1996-98.
In addition to her experiences as a coach, Burkes was a color analyst for four years for Wisconsin women's basketball games on WHA-TV, the Wisconsin Public Access Channel and Midwest Sports Channel.
Before entering the coaching ranks, Burkes (maiden name Williams) was a member of the basketball and track and field teams at the University of Wisconsin from 1991-96. A 6-0 forward, Burkes completed her career ranked among the top 15 in six UW career statistics categories, including points (905), rebounds (508), field goal percentage (.501), free throws (285) and blocks (54). Known as a defensive specialist, Burkes was a starter since her sophomore season and helped pace the Badgers to two NCAA Tournament selections. She also earned All-America recognition in the high jump during the 1995 and '96 outdoor track and field seasons.
Burkes received her bachelor's of science degree in agricultural business administration from Wisconsin in 1996. She and her husband, Keith, and their 13-year-old nephew, Watson, reside in Richmond Marina Bay.
