BEIJING - Day 12 at the 2008 Olympics saw the U.S. softball team advance to the finals. Vicky Galindo and the softball team will play Japan for gold while Jason Kidd, who plays on the U.S. men's basketball team, will play Argentina on Friday in the semifinals.

Men's Basketball
Former Golden Bear Jason Kid and the U.S. men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals after defeating Australia, 116-85, on Wednesday night. The U.S. will next take on defending champion Argentina on Friday evening to qualify for the gold-medal game on Sunday. Argentina beat Greece, 80-78, in Thursday's quarterfinals to advance. Kidd played roughly 16 minutes against the Aussies, grabbed three boards and adding four points and one assist.

Women's Field Hockey
Cal head coach and U.S. women's field hockey assistant coach Shellie Onstead and the Americans lost, 3-2, to Spain on Wednesday in the seventh-place game. The Spaniards won the game late in the second overtime period with a game-ending goal on a penalty corner from Robin Ybarra. With the loss, the U.S. finished eighth at the Olympics with only two losses, a win over New Zealand and draws with Argentina, Britain and Japan.

Softball
The U.S. softball team pulled out a 4-1 extra innings win over Japan on Wednesday to advance to the gold-medal game. The United States added four runs in the ninth inning to take the game. Vicky Galindo, a four-year letterwinner at Cal, and the Americans will face off against Japan in hopes of winning their fourth straight gold medal on Thursday at 3:30 a.m. PT.
