Dec. 4, 2006

The relatively new honor of California Student-Athlete of the Week was modified slightly for the week ending Dec. 4. The effort to find a single athlete of the week proved impossible as there were 30 athletes truly deserving of the honor - the 2006 California men's water polo team.

The Golden Bears captured the program's NCAA-record 12th national title last Sunday with a thrilling 7-6 victory over USC at the Burns Aquatic Center at Loyola Marymount. After USC tied the match with two seconds to go, Bear junior Jeff Tyrrell fired home a shot with no time left on the clock to lift Cal to one of the most dramatic NCAA Championships victories in history. In addition to Tyrell and junior goalie Mark Sheredy, the NCAA Tournament MVP, the entire Golden Bear team and coaching staff is due congratulations for their outstanding achievement.
