BERKELEY -Senior Zach White scored four goals for the third match in a row and the No. 1-ranked California men's water polo team shut out No. 9 Loyola Marymount in the second half on the way to an 11-2 victory Thursday night at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears improved to 16-2 overall and have now won eight straight matches. The Lions, from the Western Water Polo Association, dropped to 13-8.
After a 1-1 tie after the first period, Cal actually trailed in the match, 2-1, when LMU's Derek Milligan scored after mid-pool steal and a counterattack goal with 7:25 in the second period. However, from that point on it was all California as the Bears rattled off the next 10 points and held the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Junior attacker Ivan Rackov added three goals for Cal, followed by two goals from junior Luka Saponjic and singles goals from freshmen Collin Smith and Hunter Gettelfinger. Sophomore goalie Justin Parsons had another fine match with 11 saves, including blocking a five-meter penalty shot in the third period. Rackov, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leading scorer with 52 goals in 17 matches, led the Bears with four assists. White is now second on Cal's scoring list with 36 goals. As a team, the Bears combined for 15 steals against LMU.
Cal will next host a pair of MPSF matches, taking on UC Santa Barbara Saturday, Nov. 6 at noon and Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov. 7 at noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears lead the MPSF with a 4-0 league record.
