BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 3 ranked Cal men's water polo team (13-5), behind three goals apiece from freshman Jack Stampfl and freshman Zach Greenwood, defeated UC Santa Cruz, 16-5, in a non-conference men's collegiate water polo game at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley on Sunday afternoon. After being shutout for the first 4:05 of the game, the Golden Bears scored ten goals over the next twelve minutes to lead 10-0 at the half. After the Cal scored the first five goals of the second half, the Banana Slugs got on the board with 1:18 remaining in the third period. UC Santa Cruz, led by Brian Fischi with three goals, scored the first four goals of the fourth period to cut the Bears lead to 15-5. Cal's Grant Mitchell scored with 33 seconds remaining to complete the scoring and give the Bear's their thirteenth victory. Against UC Santa Cruz, Cal was also paced by freshman goalie Wil Toppen, who helped shutout the Banana Slugs in each of the first two periods and limit them to one goal in the third period. Sophomore Sandy French and Sophomore Travis Read scored two goals each while junior Grant Mitchell, sophomore Daniel Orloff, freshman Travis Bickham, freshman Bryan Schnugg, freshman Nick Ferrif, and freshman Eric Johnson added also notched a goal each for the Bears. Cal returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host No. 19 UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
