The No. 5 ranked Cal men's water polo team (9-4) fell to No. 1 USC, 12-7, in the semifinals of the SoCal Open, Sunday morning, Oct. 12 at Raleigh Runnels Aquatic Center. Tied 1-1, the Trojans went on a 7-0 run and kept the Golden Bears scoreless for about 10 ½ minutes of action. The Golden Bears scored the next three goals, two by Frank Reynolds, to cut the lead to 8-4 early in the third period, but that would be as close as Cal would get. The Golden Bears got three goals from senior captain Frank Reynolds and single goals from Trent Calder, Thomas Pearson, Brian Dudley and junior Mike Sample. Sophomore goalie Jacob McIntosh tallied seven saves.

"USC just took us out of our game early and controlled tempo," said Cal coach Kirk Everist. "We played hard in the last two quarters and we were able to build off that for UCLA. It was a great learning experience for the team and we just need to get back to work and get better."

Cal will now play No. 2 UCLA for the third place at 4 p.m. The Bruins lost 7-4 to No. 3 Stanford in the other semifinal. UCLA defeated the Bears 6-4 in the semifinals of the NorCal Open Sept. 21. On Saturday, the Bears had defeated No. 14 St. Francis, 11-5, and No. 4 Pepperdine, 8-6.
