SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -Despite junior Collin Smith's three goals and two goals from redshirt freshman Thomas Agramonte, the Cal men's water polo team (8-4) suffered a 13-11 defeat to UC Irvine in the second round of the SoCal Invitational Saturday (Sept. 29) at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta. The Golden Bears will next face Pacific at 8 a.m. on Sunday. If Cal wins that match, it will play for the tournament fifth place at 3 p.m. The Tigers had fallen to No. 1-ranked USC, 9-4, in another second round match.
The Bears had a 6-5 advantage over the Anteaters at halftime, but were outscored, 7-2, in the third period and were not able to overcome the 12-8 deficit. It was the first time Cal had lost a water polo match by one than one goal since the end of the 2010 season when the Bears fell to USC in the national championship match, 12-10 in overtime.
Earlier on Saturday, 12 different players scored for Cal, including four goals by sophomore Aleksa Saponjic, as the Bears dominated Air Force, 22-4. Cal scored five goals in the first three periods and notched six goals in the fourth period for the commanding win over the Falcons. Besides the scoring of Saponjic, redshirt freshman Colin Mulcahy added three goals and Smith paced the Bears with five steals.
Cal goalie Michael Boggan had 10 saves against Air Force in the first match, and recorded 11 saves against UC Irvine. It was the Bears' second big win over Air Force this season, defeating the Falcons, 19-2, back on Sept. 15 in the first round match of the NorCal Invitational. Cal faced UC Irvine for the second time this season. On Sept. 15 in the second round of the NorCal Invite at Stanford, the Bears had defeated the Anteaters, 14-7.
