STOCKTON, CALIF. -Paced by 14 saves from junior goalie Justin Parsons and two goals apiece from senior Luka Saponjic and junior Ayal Keren, No. 2-ranked Cal (4-0), despite going scoreless in the final quarter, held on to defeat No. 6 Pepperdine, 8-7, in a quarterfinal match-up Saturday (Sept. 17) during the NorCal Tournament at Delta College in Stockton. Earlier in the day, the Golden Bears dominated Vanguard, 27-3.
Cal will next face the winner of UCLA-UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on the University of the Pacific campus. If the Bears win their semifinal match, they will play in the championship Sunday at 5:20 p.m.
Cal outscored the Waves, 5-3, in the first two quarters before extending their advantage to 8-5 going into the final stanza. Pepperdine turned up the defensive intensity, however, holding the Bears scoreless for the remainder of the match.
The Waves tallied two goals in the fourth quarter and had a pair of chances to tie the contest. The first opportunity came on a five-meter penalty shot attempt that Cal goalie Parsons blocked. The second opportunity came with just one minute left in the match as the Waves had a six-on-five advantage, but were again stopped by a Parsons' save.
In the Bears' big win over Vanguard Saturday morning, senior Ivan Rackov led Cal with seven goals, including a trio of goals in the third quarter. Luka Saponjic added six goals, while freshman Luka Ivanovic chipped in three goals.
