BERKELEY - California men's tennis senior Tommie Murphy and junior Riki McLachlan will lead a quintet of Golden Bears into play at the 2011 Saint Mary's Gael Classic, this weekend (Oct. 28-30) at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif. Freshmen Chase Melton, Andrew Pises, and Andrew Scholnickwill join Murphy and McLachlan for the two-flight tourney. Players from Fresno Pacific, University of the Pacific, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sonoma State, UC Irvine, and UCLA, will join Cal's five and players from host Saint Mary's College. As the top-seeded singles player in the red flight, McLachlan received a first-round bye and will face the winner between USF's Germaine Bahri and UCLA's Michael Hui at 1:15 p.m. PT on Friday. The top six seeds in the tournament will not face a first-round opponent. Murphy draws Nico Vinel of Santa Clara in his 10:45 a.m. first-round match, Scholnick will face Fresno Pacific's Nathan Martinet, at 10:30 a.m., and seventh-seeded Melton takes on Santa Clara's Eugene Muchynski at 11:45 a.m. In the eight-man blue flight, Pises draws Sonoma State's Daniel Henke at 11:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals. In the doubles bracket's round of 16, Murphy and Scholnick will team up for a 9 a.m. match against San Francisco's Bahri and Jacob Hartwig. Melton and Pises also get a 9 a.m. start against Saad Benkirane and Sherif Hamdy of Saint Mary's College. Quarterfinals are set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with semifinals and the championship match scheduled for Sunday.
