Oct. 20, 2002

San Diego, Calif. - Cal's Wayne Wong, the No. 1 seed in the Flight 1 Singles Draw, defeated San Diego State's Daniel Jung today by the score of 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 to win the 2002 San Diego All-College Flight 1 Singles championship.

Wong breezed through the first round, defeating UC San Diego's Jeff Wilson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The round of 16 brought tougher competition, but a win nonetheless, 7-6, 6-4 over San Diego State's Gabe Coren. As could be predicted, the level of play increased in the quarterfinals as it took Wong three sets to defeat Arizona's Colin O'Grady, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. San Diego's Nicolas Beuque gave Wong a ride in the semifinals, taking the match to three sets in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 Wong victory. The win launched Wong into today's final match, where he played possibly his finest tennis of the tournament in the win.

Cal will be back in action Oct. 26-29 when it travels to the Omni Hotels Regionals.
