FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - California's Ben McLachlan won in singles and - with brother Riki McLachlan - in doubles on the first day of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center.

The 16th-ranked player in the nation, Ben McLachlan beat No. 46 Daniel Whitehead of Texas, 6-2, 6-1, in the singles round of 32. The Cal junior will play top-seeded and eighth-ranked Alex Domijan of Virginia in the round of 16 on Friday.

In doubles, Riki McLachlan - a senior - and Ben McLachlan topped Idaho's Abid Akbar-Marius Cirstea, 8-4, in the round of 32, before besting Georgia Tech's Vikram Hundal-Juan Spir, 8-6, in the round of 16. The Bears battle more Cavaliers in the quarterfinal round on Friday, in the form of Virginia's No. 51 Jarmere Jenkins-Mac Styslinger.
