MORAGA, Calif. - Third-seeded California men's tennis freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt took home the 2009 Saint Mary's Invitational singles championship on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex as he defeated eighth-seeded sophomore Nick Andrews in the title match, 7-6, 6-2, with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker. Andrews took out second-seeded junior Bozhidar Katsarov, 6-2, 7-5, in his semifinal match and Konigsfeldt dispatched a former Golden Bear, seventh-seeded Thai Tu of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-2, in his semifinal to set up the all-Cal title match. In doubles matches, Andrews and sophomore Sky Lovill took out USF's fourth-seeded team of Asaf Cohen and Tu, 8-6, in the quarterfinal before earning another 8-6 win against Steven Dawson and Gavin Leon of Saint Mary's in the semifinal. The second-seeded duo of Konigsfeldt and junior Pedro Zerbini shut out Michael Carreno and Lucas Tirelli of Saint Mary's, 8-0, in quarterfinal play before dismissing Rainer Nachbauer and William Schumacher of San Francisco from the semifinal, 8-4. The all-Cal doubles final was not played because of tournament delays. In the doubles consolation quarterfinal, the top-seeded team of Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan earned an 8-6 win against Taylor Bianco and Connor Olson of Sonoma State in the quarterfinal before falling, 8-4, to Torsten Keil-Long and Nick Lopez of UC Davis in the semifinal. Senior Bijan Hejazi and sophomore Tommie Murphy fell, 8-6, to Nick Amaroli and Tyler Lee of UC Davis in the consolation quarterfinal.
