MORAGA, Calif. - The California men's tennis team faced tough competition on the second day of the 2011 Saint Mary's Gael Classic on the courts of the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears fell in singles quarterfinal and final matches, and were forced to withdraw from other matches due to injuries. In the Red Flight singles quarterfinal, top-seeded junior Riki McLachlan won his first set, 7-5, over Nico Vinel of Santa Clara, but was edged in tiebreakers, 8-6, in the second set, and 7-3 in the third set. Freshman Andrew Pises was defeated in the blue singles final by Will Martin of Saint Mary's College as he withdrew following a 6-4, 1-0 result. Senior Tommie Murphy dropped his singles consolation match to Michael Hui of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1. Murphy and freshman Andrew Scholnick were scheduled to play a doubles consolation match, but withdrew from the tournament. Pises and McLachlan won their doubles consolation quarterfinal match, 8-5, over Stefan Loop and Xavier Smith of Fresno Pacific, but did not play their semifinal match.
