MORAGA, Calif. - Top-seeded California men's tennis junior Riki McLachlan earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Michael Hui of UCLA in the singles round of 16 of the 2011 Saint Mary's Gael Classic at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Fri., Oct. 28. First-year Golden Bear Andrew Pises won a pair of matches to earn a berth in the Blue Flight's singles title match.

Senior Tommie Murphy claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eric Gast of UC Irvine in the Red Flight's round of 32, but fell, to fourth-seeded Alex Brigham of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16. Freshman Andrew Scholnick suffered a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Nathan Martinet of Fresno Pacific, and was defeated, 6-3, 6-1, by Tomasz Krzyszkowski of Pacific in a consolation match.

McLachlan will face Santa Clara's Nico Vinel at 10:45 a.m. PT, on Saturday, in his quarterfinal match. Should he advance, he will face the winner between Fresno Pacific's Kirill Sinitsyn and UCLA's Brigham at 1:45 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for noon on Sunday.

Pises put together an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pacific's Vincent Paganetti in his blue-flight quarterfinal match. After dropping his first set, 6-3, in the semifinal against Jacob Hartwig of San Francisco, Pises responded to take the second set with a dominating 7-1 win in the tiebreaker. Hartwig withdrew from the match and retired due to injury with Pises up, 4-1, in the third set. Pises will face Will Martin of Saint Mary's in the blue final at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Both of Cal's doubles teams were edged in close first-round matches. Murphy and Scholnick suffered an 8-6 loss to Germaine Bahri and Hartwig of USF; while McLachlan and Pises came up short in a 7-1 tiebreaker loss to Saad Benkirane and Sherif Hamdy of Saint Mary's.

Play continues on Saturday with both doubles teams taking part in back-draw quarterfinal matches at 9:30 a.m. The back draw will play out with semifinals on Sunday at 10 a.m. and the final at 11:15 a.m. Murphy is also scheduled to play in a singles consolation match on Saturday.
