BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team advanced six players to the singles round of 32 on Friday (Oct. 23) at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship. The Golden Bears got seven wins in the round of 128 and six more in the round of 64 in matches at Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts. Fourth-seeded junior Pedro Zerbini had a first-round bye before he took out Hugo Verdi of Fresno State in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.

As one of the ninth-seeds, sophomore Nick Andrews also had a first-round bye before he blew out Roman Dojcak of Gonzaga, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 64. Junior Jonathan Dahan got two wins as he defeated Scott Sullivan of Gonzaga, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round; and Chris Aria of UC Davis, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 64. Junior Bozhidar Katsarov also recorded two victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Matt Welty of Saint Mary's and a 6-2, 6-4 win over Skyler Tateishi of Washington.

Freshman Christoffer Konigfeldt defeated Oregon's Doug Mayeda in the first round, 6-2, 6-2. Then, in a tighter match, Konigsfeldt pulled out a 7-4 first-set tiebreaker victory over Tom Pham of Santa Clara before closing the match with a 6-4 score in the second set. Junior Zach Gilbert needed three sets to take out Jackson Martin of Portland, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, in the first round; but the third-year Bear returned to the court to upset one of the 17th-seeds in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nicolas Vinel of Santa Clara.

Freshman Riki McLachlan, sophomore Tommie Murphy and senior Bijan Hejazi each won their first round matches before falling in the round of 64. Murphy was taken out by third-seeded No. 32-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington, 6-2, 6-1; and Hejazi pushed No. 87 Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State to three sets before falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Sky Lovill fell, 6-3, 6-3, to 17th-seeded Kyle Morrow of Washington in the first round and will be entered into the singles back draw.


 

 

The Bears are back on court at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 24, for two rounds of doubles matches and one round of singles matches. The singles consolation bracket will also play two rounds on Saturday.
