USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships Draws and Results

MORAGA, Calif. - Four Golden Bears moved on to the singles round of 32 on the first day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary's. California' junior and second-seeded Ben McLachlan, 16th-seeded junior Campbell Johnson and co-17th seeds Riki McLachlan and Mads Engsted advanced after winning in the round of 64.

The competition did not include any doubles action on Friday.

In the round of 64, Riki McLachlan, a senior, defeated Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov, 6-2, 6-4; Johnson topped Portland's Paxton Deuel, 6-4, 6-2; Engsted, a freshman, defeated Thomas Hunt of Saint Mary's, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-0; and Ben McLachlan beat Pacific's Trevor James, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Jordan Smith fell to San Francisco's sixth-seeded Thai Tu, 6-4, 6-1; sophomore Gregory Bayane - also seeded 17th - dropped a 6-0, 6-4, match to Stanford's Trey Strobel; and freshman Wyatt Houghton lost to Tuomas Manner of Saint Mary's - another 17th seed - 6-3, 6-1.

In the round of 128, Riki McLachlan stopped Sacramento State's Roy Brandys, 6-1, 7-6 (5); Smith beat Gonzaga's Pablo Mosquera Perez, 6-3, 6-3; Bayane topped San Francisco's Johan Samuelsson, 6-3, 6-1; Houghton defeated Fresno State's Jeremy Quiroz, 6-4, 6-1; and Engsted knocked off Sacramento State's Niranjan Ram, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Sophomore Andrew Scholnick lost to San Francisco's Nils Skajaa, 6-3, 6-3.

 

 

The regional - which ends on Tuesday, Oct. 23 - continues with day two on Saturday. Action beings at 8:30 a.m. with two rounds of doubles.
