SAN FRANCISCO - California men's tennis senior Ahmed Ismail remained undefeated when he picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over San Francisco's Jacob Hartwig on the first day of the 2011 Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club on Thurs., Oct. 13. The Golden Bears sent three players into the round of 16 with first-day singles victories.
Junior Riki McLachlan moved into the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over USF's Thai Tu, and freshman Andrew Scholnick claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win over Mark DeCastro of San Francisco. Scholnick completed the Cal trio thanks to an 8-6 win in the first-set tiebreaker. Freshman Chase Melton had the only first-round match to go three sets. San Diego's Thibaut Visay took a 6-1 win in the first set, but Melton forced the third with a 6-2 win in the second. Visay came back to win, 6-1, in the third.
Ismail will face Pepperdine's Hugh Clark in the round of 16 at 1:30 p.m. PT on Fri., Oct. 14. McLachlan draws Stanford's Daniel Ho for a 1:45 p.m. match, and Scholnick will take on third-seeded No. 67-ranked Clarke Spinosa of San Diego at 3 p.m.
In doubles play, the Bears' duo of Melton and senior Tommie Murphy claimed an 8-6 win over Jonathan Knowlman and Will Schumacher of San Francisco in the round of 16. Ismail and McLachlan went the distance against Pepperdine's team of Clark and David Sofaer, but fell, 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Melton and Murphy move ahead to face the second-seeded and No. 48-ranked tandem of Gavin Leon and Maxime Olivan of Saint Mary's College in a 9 a.m. PT match on Fri., Oct. 14.
