DAVIS, Calif. - California's Gregory Bayane won twice on Friday to set up a singles quarterfinal match on Saturday with Stanford's Daniel Ho in the Aggie Invitational. He was part of a contingent of Golden Bears who advanced to play on the second day of the tournament, hosted by UC Davis.

Playing in Flight A, Bayane, a sophomore, defeated Santa Clara's Eugene Muchynski, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1, in the round of 32 and Pacific's Denis Stolyarov, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16. In Saturday's quarterfinal, Bayane plays Daniel Ho of Saint Mary's at 12:45 p.m.

Also in Flight A Singles, Bears Wyatt Houghton and Andrew Scholnick lost in the round of 32. Houghton, a freshman, dropped his match to San Francisco's Gremaine Bahri, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, while Scholnick, a sophomore, fell to Jesse Kiuru of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 6-2. Both Bears moved on to the Flight A Singles Consolation draw, with Houghton losing to Nevada's Victor Ouvrard, 6-1, 6-3, and Scholnick losing to Toki Sherbakov of UC Davis, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (4).

Houghton also played in Flight B Singles, falling to James Markiewicz of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-1, while Cal freshman Stuart Miller beat Sonoma State's Seth Hein, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, and freshman Jordan Smith lost to Fresno State's Sal Kartik, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, in the round of 32. Miller moved on to the round of 16, losing to Aggie Hugo Fortin, 6-2, 6-2.

Houghton and Smith are both scheduled to play more Flight B Singles on Saturday, with Houghton taking on Nevada's Ryan Andrada in the round of 16 at 2 p.m. and Smith - in the consolation draw - playing Sacramento State's Danny Diaz at 12:30 p.m.

 

 

In Flight A Doubles, the third-seeded pair of Scholnick and Bayane beat Pacific's Alex Hamilton and Valentim Goncalves, 9-8 (5), in the round of 16. The Bears next play Fresno State's Fresno State's Reid DeLaubenfels and Sam McNeil at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

In Flight B Doubles, Cal's top-seeded duo of Houghton and Nikhil Jayashankar beat Sonoma State's David Hutton and Drexler Dy, 8-2, in the round of 16. The Bears play Aggies Brett Bacharach and George Horowicz in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Also in the round of 16, Smith and Miller lost to San Francisco's Bernard Saraiva and Nils Skaa, 8-4. Miller and Smith move on to the consolation draw and play the doubles team of Diaz and Joaquin Marquez of Sacramento State at 10 a.m. in Saturday's quarterfinals.
