OJAI, Calif. -- The California men's tennis team had a rough go of it during Thursday's opening day at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships, but there were two bright spots for the Golden Bears as Kian Raiszadeh and David Sutton both advanced to the Flight 2 quarterfinals.
Raiszadeh had perhaps the easier route as the senior from Davis, Calif., earned a bye in the first round then coasted past Oregon's David Becker 6-1, 6-2 in the second. Sutton, who had previously never won a match at the Pac-10 Tournament, had to rally from deficits in both of his matches to advance. Sutton, a senior from New York, N.Y., came back from a set down to defeat Christoph Poehler of USC 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 in the first round. He also fell behind in his match against Oregon's Mark Wolley, but had enough to gut out a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Senior Bobby Mahal and freshman Scott Kintz were the only other Bears to produce wins in the opening rounds.
Both Sutton and Raiszadeh will return to the courts tomorrow at 8 a.m. for their quarterfinal round matches.
Cal will have four team's in action on Friday as the doubles action get underway at 12 noon.
