Men's Tennis Rolls Past ASU

April 11, 1998

BERKELEY - The No. 28-ranked California men's tennis team rolled past No. 35 Arizona State, 5-2, in its final Pac-10 home dual match of the season Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Center. The victory gave the Golden Bears a sweep in the season series with Sun Devils as Cal also defeated ASU, 4-3, on March 27 in Tempe, Ariz. The win also broke a two-match losing streak for Cal (14-4, 7-3 Pac-10). Arizona State, which fell at Stanford on Friday, dropped to 8-10 overall, 3-8 Pac-10, with the loss.

Playing without its two top players, Bobby Mahal (elbow) and Nathan Jackmon (shoulder), who were both unavailable due to nagging injuries, California head coach Peter Wright was forced to go with his "B" lineup against Arizona State. But it didn't seem to matter as a fired-up Bear squad quickly surged to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point.

The Cal duo of Chris Santoso and David Sutton were first to notch victory as the pair came back from a 3-6 deficit to win five straight games for an 8-6 win on court No. 3 over Arizona State's Peter Dani and Casey Was. Cal then sewed up the doubles point as Erik Dmytruk and Minh Le knocked off ASU top tandem of Tim Hammond and Ed Carter, 8-6, on court No. 1.

Arizona State rallied back to even the dual at one point apiece when Gustavo Marcaccio quickly dispatched Le 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles position. But that's as close as the Sun Devils would get as Kian Raiszadeh, Dmytruk and Adrian Barnes won the next three contests in succession to give the Bears a 4-1 lead, clinching the match. The teams then split the last two points to provide the final score.

Cal will return to the hardcourts at the Hellman Tennis Center for the last time this year when the Bears host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Tuesday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m., in their home season finale. Arizona State, will also be in action on Tuesday, as the Sun Devils return home to face Northern Arizona.
