BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California men's tennis team had its five-match winning streak halted by No. 1 Stanford, 7-0, at the Hellman Tennis Center Tuesday. It was the second time this season that the defending National Champions had blanked the Golden Bears as Stanford also gave Cal is first loss of the season, Feb. 28. The loss dropped Cal to 13-3 overall, 6-2 Pac-10, while Stanford's record improved to an unblemished 19-0, 8-0 Pac-10.
It didn't take Stanford long to get on the board as the Cardinal swept all three pro sets to secure the doubles point. The Cardinal duo of Geoff Abrams and Charles Hoeveler were first on the board with their 8-0 shutout of Cal's Adrian Barnes and Scott Kintz on court No. 3. Stanford's Paul Goldstein and Ryan Wolters then defeated Nathan Jackmon and Bobby Mahal on court No. 1, 8-3. Bob and Mike Bryan completed the Cardinal doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Erik Dmytruk and Minh Le.
In singles, Cal continued to have its problems as Stanford quickly rolled to a 5-0 advantage, taking the first four matches in straight sets to lock up the victory.
The only drama on the day came on courts five and six where both matches went three sets. In the No. 4 position, Goldstein easily took the first set, 6-0, but Cal captain Kian Raiszadeh bounced back to square the match by winning the second set, 6-2. Raiszadeh then took a 3-0 advantage in the third and it appeared that the Bears were on their way taking their first point of the year from the Cardinal. But Goldstein battled back to sweep the remaining six games to win the point for Stanford.
On court No. 5, Cal's David Sutton and Stanford's Alex Kim waged a similar battle, but like Goldstein, Kim proved to be too much for the Cal senior, winning the seventh and final point by a margin of 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
The Bears will try to get back on the winning track Friday, April 10, when they host Pac-10 foe Arizona at the Hellman Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
