Big Comeback Lifts Bears to Victory

March 27, 1998

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 30th-ranked California men's tennis team traveled to Arizona State Friday and defeated the 24th-ranked Sun Devils, 4-3. With the victory, Cal improved to 10-2 overall, 3-1 in Pac-10 play, and equaled its win total for all of last year when the Golden Bears posted a 10-13 mark. ASU, meanwhile, dropped to 6-7 overall, 1-5 Pac-10.

The victory was also Cal's biggest comeback of the season as Arizona State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Bears stormed their way back to win four straight singles points for the win.

Things started out good for Cal in doubles as the tandem of Adrian Barnes and Scott Kintz defeated ASU's Peter Dani and Casey Was, 8-6, on court No. 3. But ASU won the two remaining pro sets to secure the doubles point and Cal headed into singles down 1-0 for only the third time this season.

Arizona State continued to roll in singles and appeared to have the match and the momentum in hand when the Bears struck back. ASU stretched its lead to 3-0, winning the first two singles points as Gustavo Marcaccio defeated Bobby Mahal, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 and Alex Osterrieth got past Nathan Jackmon, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2. But Cal senior David Sutton sparked the Bears comeback with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Miles Rogers in the No. 6 position as Cal went on to reel off wins on courts 4, 5 and 6 to tie the dual at three apiece. Kian Raiszadeh defeated Tim Hammond, 6-4, 6-2 and Adrian Barnes downed Peter Dani, 7-5, 6-1 on courts No. 4 and 5 respectively. Cal finally closed out Arizona State by taking the deciding match at the No. 3 position as Minh Le came back from a set down to outlast Ed Carter, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Golden Bears will wrap up their mini road trip through the desert when they travel to Tucson to face the University of Arizona on Saturday, March 28, also at Noon.
