Men's Tennis Continues to Roll, Blanks Utah 6-0

Feb. 25, 1998

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California men's tennis team kept its undefeated season alive with a 6-0 shutout of visiting Utah Wednesday at the Hellman Tennis Center. The victory was Cal's fourth shutout of the season and improved the Golden Bears to 7-0 , their best start since 1989 when Cal opened the season with an 11-0 mark. Utah, which defeated Cal, 5-4, last season , dropped to 7-5 on the year with the loss.

Cal faced little resistance from Utah, winning all but one of the matches in straight sets. The only contest that offered any drama was between Adrian Barnes and Phil Rodrigue at No. 3. After Rodrigue took the first set, 6-4, Barnes stormed back to take the final two, including the third which was decided in a tie-breaker.

Due to more rain in the Bay Area, the start of play was delayed over two hours and with Cal up 5-0 after singles, all doubles matches were canceled.

Cal returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28, when the Bears travel across the Bay to take on rival Stanford (11-0) in a battle of undefeated squads. Match time is scheduled for 12 noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the Stanford campus.
