PALM SPRINGS, Calif./THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The busy Golden Bears competed for 14th-ranked California in two tournaments in southern California on Friday - the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks.

With Cal head coach Peter Wright leading the way at the Palm Springs event - dubbed the "Wimbledon of College Tennis" - the Bears split with No. 13 Mississippi in singles, as junior Campbell Johnson upset Mississippi's fifth-ranked Jonas Lutjen, 7-5, 6-1, while senior teammate and 42nd ranked Christoffer Konigsfeldt lost to Mississippi's No. 95 William Kallberg, 6-0, 6-1.

Cal had a challenging time in singles and doubles against sixth-ranked Georgia, as No. 66 Cal junior Ben McLachlan lost to the Bulldogs' Ben Wagland, 6-3, 6-4, and senior Riki McLachlan fell to Georgia's No. 16 Hernus Pieters, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. The McLachlans - ranked seventh nationally in doubles - dropped an 8-4 match to KU Singh and Nathan Pasha.

In the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Cal freshman Mads Engsted won his first match - 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2 - against Stanford's Matt Kandath, but the young Bear lost to USC's Roberto Quiroz, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(4). Freshman Wyatt Houghton dropped matches to USC's Jonny Wang, 6-2, 6-2, and then to Stanford's Robert Stineman, 6-4, 6-1.

 

 

Both events continue on Saturday, with the National Collegiate Tennis Classic ending on Sunday and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup concluding on Monday.
