BERKELEY -

The California men's swimming and diving program, the defending 2011 and 2012 NCAA team champions, has released the names of six talented high school athletes who will be joining the Golden Bears' program in the fall of 2013, it was announced today (Nov. 14) by head coach David Durden. Cal's list of 2013 newcomers feature high school standouts Janardan Burns, Sven Campbell, Jonathan Fiepke, Long Gutierrez, Ryan Murphy and Dillon Williams.

Janardan Burns is a talented distance freestyler from Aliso Viejo, Calif., who is a member of both the U.S. Open Water National Team and the U.S. Junior National Team for 2012-13. Burns recently competed for the national team at the 2012 Pan Pacific Championships in Honolulu in August, 2012. He is listed as a five-star recruit by SwimmingWorldMagazine.com.

A local product from Oakland, Sven Campbell comes to Cal as an outstanding sprint freestyler, IMer and backstroker. At Campolindo High School he is a six-time North Coast Section record holder (three individual events, three relays), a two-time pacific record holder (200 back for 15-16 and 17-18 age groups) as well as placing second in the 200 back and was third in points at the 2012 Summer Junior Nationals.

Jonathan Fiepke hails from West Des Moines, Iowa and attends Dowling Catholic High School. Fiepke is a three-time state champion in the 50 and 100 free, and the 400 free relay, and was named the Iowa High School State Swimmer of the Year as a junior. He has been a Junior National competitor in 2011 and 2012, as well.

Salt Lake City, Utah native Long Gutierrez, is a member of the Mexican National Team as well as having competed with USA Swimming since age six. Gutierrez owned the second fastest time in the 100-yard fly by a 13-14 year old in American history, and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials at age 15 with a time of 2:02.92 in the 200 fly. He currently holds 43 Utah state records, is a nine-time All-American and has a 3.8 GPA. Gutierrez joined the Mexican National Team last December and already owns four Mexican national age group records.

Rated one of the nation's two six-star recruits by SwimmingWorldMagazine.com, Ryan Murphy comes to Cal from the prestigious The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. Murphy has a best short course time of 1:40.90 in the 200 back, which would place him in the A final of last year's NCAA championship. He also has a time of 53.76 in the 100-meter back, which was ranked 16th in the world in 2012, and was a member of the U.S. National Team at the 2011 Pan Pacific Championships and the 2012 World Championships.

From Danville and attending Monte Vista High School, Dillon Williams is a talented freestyler, backstroker, butterflyer who was also a receiver and safety on his high school football team. Williams is an eight-time All-American and a three-time North Coast Section finalist in swimming. He is also a three-time North Coast Section Scholar Athlete and a Scholastic All-American for 2011-12. Williams is a National Age Group record holder in the 200 and 400 medley relays as well.

"These are six student-athletes who are not only great swimmers, but great people," said Durden, who has led the Bears to back-to-back national titles and has been named NCAA Coach of the Meet three years in a row. "In their individual recruiting process they walked away from the Cal experience excited to be a part of our academic environment and our athletic culture. Not only will this class contribute to our successes in the pool, but they will enhance the character of our program.

"Jonathan (Fiepke) and Sven (Campbell) will help our sprint core with Sven being able to extend into the backstroke events and the 200 freestyle. Long (Gutierrez) covers some ground for us in the fly events, the freestyle events, and then into the shorter IM, with Dillon (Williams) having a similar profile in the shorter fly races and freestyle events. Janardan (Burns) bolsters our distance group, and Ryan's (Murphy) recent performances at the Florida High School state swimming championships already places him amongst the top athletes at the NCAA level in his events. Nick (Folker, strength coach), Yuri (Suguiyama, assistant coach), Nort (Thornton, head coach emeritus), and myself are looking forward to working with these young men, both in and out of the pool."
