FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Sophomore Nathan Adrian won the 50-yard freestyle in a school-record time and automatic NCAA qualifying time of 18.94 for fourth-ranked California, which also posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:17.62 to win the 200-yard freestyle relay on Thursday night in the Husky Invitational at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Cal, which won four of five finals on Thursday, posted NCAA B qualifying times in the 50 free (senior Bennett Clark was second in 19.83 and sophomore Nick Cordes was 17th in 20.01), 200-yard individual medley (freshman Martin Liivamagi won in 1:45.30, sophomore Martti Aljand was ninth in 1:46.51 and junior Sean Mahoney won the preliminary race in 1:47.12) and 400-yard medley relay (Cal won in 3:10.01). The Bears lead the men's side of the meet with 397 points. In the 50-free final, Adrian swam more than one second faster than the time (19.87) he posted to win the 50-free prelim this morning. His 18.94 surpasses the former school mark of 19.01 that former Cal great and fellow 2008 Olympian Duje Draganja set in 2005. The Bears began the night with a win in the 200-free relay. Adrian led off the race, with senior Bennett Clark, sophomore Josh Daniels and sophomore Graeme Moore following. Cal won by more than two seconds over second-place UCSB (1:19.69).
Senior John Foster notched Cal's best finish in the 500 free, swimming 4:25.82 to take fourth place. Cal won three consolation finals and three C finals tonight, with freshman Isaac Howell (4:27.73) taking the consolation final and ninth place in the 500 free. Bears junior Aaron Casey won the C final and finished 17th in the 500 free in 4:25.37. Also in the 200 IM final, Mahoney was fifth in 1:48.98 and senior teammate Ian Lentz won the C final to take 17th in 1:50.58. A third Bear - Moore - reached the 50-free final, finishing fourth in 20.03, just one hundredth of a second from an NCAA B cut. Daniels won Cal's third consolation final in 20.08 to place ninth in the 50 free. Cordes won the 50-free C final with his NCAA B qualifying time. Friday's men's action begins with the 400 individual medley slated to start at approximately 10:01 a.m. Husky Invitational Day 1 Standings (through 10 events) Cal's Thursday Results Finals
